With the tool, you control how desktop alerts are displayed. You are able to select how several alerts are shown at once, and how long before every alert is dismissed. It has a choice of selecting desktop alerts for all incoming e-mail or only for those delivered to directories you specify, unlike in Outlook 2003 which only enables desktop alerts for your Inbox.
