Review and how it works
OpenOffice is entirely free (made under Open Source license) replacement to Microsoft Office. It incorporates similar tools such as a document editing and processing application, a full-featured spread sheet tool, an application similar to Access, an instrument to generate professional presentations and a PDF creator. It also comes with a software to work with mathematical formulae.
Writer - it is word processor similar in functionality to Microsoft Word and WordPerfect. It is able to generate PDF documents without any other application, and can be used as a simple editor useful for making and modifying webpages.
Calc - alternative to the well known Excel or Lotus 1-2-3 with a wide range of tools. Calc offers a number of tools not present in Excel, like a system which defines on the fly the series for graphing. It can export spreadsheets in PDF format.
Impress - an alternartive solution to PowerPoint. The users will be able to generate impressive presentations in SWF or PDF format. In this way these can be viewed on each personal computer using a specific player / viewer.
Base - Database administration utility comparable with Microsoft Access. Base permits to build and to work with databases. It may create forms and reports to provide trouble-free access to data for any user. Also this application from OpenOffice can be used in various database systems, like JET, ODBC and MySQL/PostgreSQL without the necessity for each of them to be installed.
Draw - Vector graphics editor application, similar to MS Visio and equivalent in complexity to the initial releases of CorelDRAW. It comes with various DTP application tools for instance Scribus and MS Publisher.
Math - An application useful for making mathematical formulae, the equivalent of the Equation Editor provided by Microsoft. The formulae may be inserted in any document created with OpenOffice (Calc, Writer, etc.).
