SpeedFan can read CPU usage levels and monitor temperatures, through hardware monitor chips from the motherboard which show the temperature recorded by sensors connected to various places inside the computer, and, according to the setup, does its best to maintain them at the desired or optimal value.
You may modify the fan speed according to the temperature of the hard drive or CPU. When choosing parameters for the minimum and maximum fan speed, try to set them by hand by disablng all the related FANs checkboxes) and listen to the noise. When no noise from the fan is perceptible then that value can be set as the minimum value.
For protecting the hardware, if the warning temperature is reached, the tool raises the fan speed by 100, regardless the maximum speed set.
