To password protect pages and folders on your website and restrict visitors access, do not forget to declare the htpasswd in .htaccess.
.htaccess files found on web servers such as Apache are originally used for authentication or authorization by specifying certain security restrictions for desired directory, hence the filename contains the word "access". To make the mechanism work, the .htaccess file should be accompanied by a .htpasswd file which stores usernames and their corresponding passwords in encrypted form. Being hidden files on Unix-like operating systems such as Linux, their names start with a dot.
